Kelvin Smith Ocean Society

The Kelvin Smith Ocean Society (Ocean Society) is the leadership level donor society, recognizing those friends who make a significant annual unrestricted contribution to support the mission of Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration. Ocean Society members have a unique interest in our mission and their annual gifts substantially support our core educational, research, curatorial and public service activities.

In appreciation of their generous support, Ocean Society members take part in an exclusive program designed to bring them closer to the heart of the Aquarium & Institute, our animal collections and staff.

Leopard SharkWho was Kelvin Smith?
Kelvin Smith was a Cleveland Philanthropist, businessman and chemical engineer who trained at Dartmouth College and Case Institute of Technology. He was intrigued by the idea of creating artificial ocean water. His interest led to the founding of Mystic Aquarium in 1974.
Kelvin Smith was a man known for civic leadership & regularly inspired people to reach their full potential. His curiosity & spirit guide us on as we honor his vision with the formation and continuation of the Kelvin Smith Ocean Society.

What do your annual Ocean Society dues actually support?
Ocean Society contributions are unrestricted annual gifts that support the care and well being of our animals: food (100s of pounds of fish a day), vitamins, expert veterinary care, enrichment programs and environment upkeep. They also help improve and refresh our exhibits and facilities, provide educational programming, and support our talented staff.
